What is the Opportunity?

Reporting jointly to The Glenn Gould School’s Assistant Dean, Academics and Associate Director, Operations, the Library Services Manager plans, evaluates and promotes the operations of the Rupert Edwards Library at The Royal Conservatory of Music. This mandate encompasses a range of library services across the entire RCM organization, including the Glenn Gould School, the Phil and Eli Taylor Performance Academy for Young Artists and the Oscar Peterson School.

Responsibilities include reference services, collection development, technical services, oversight and management of the performance collection, circulation, technology applications, managing an instrument bank, and assessment of student and faculty needs. This position also establishes appropriate budgetary and service priorities, resource requirements, and supervises library staff and student assistants.

Main Duties & Responsibilities

There are seven (7) primary areas of responsibility to consider, detailed as follows:

Collection Development and Analysis

  • Acquires physical and digital resources in accordance with the library’s collection development policy.
  • Conducts collection assessments to measure usage patterns, determine withdrawals and replacements, and develop effective cataloguing and acquisition strategies.
  • Prints and binds scores, producing replacement or preservation copies of music in the collection.
  • Maintains subscription access to the library’s suite of electronic resources and monitors usage.
  • Liaises with faculty, students, and staff to ensure that library collections and services are meeting their needs.

Orchestral Librarianship

  • Manages the library’s orchestral music collection and purchases, rents, prepares, and distributes orchestral material for the school’s performing ensembles.
  • Receives and reviews rental requests from Canadian community orchestras for Performance Collection music in conjunction with the Library Services Assistant.

Technology & Media Production

  • Catalogues and processes new and backlogged print music material within an AACR2r/MARC21 environment using Koha Integrated Library System.
  • Maintains operability of and regularly updates the OPAC and staff sides of the Rupert Edwards Library website.
  • Coordinates with internal IT Staff and external vendors to ensure that library technology services (EZProxy, E-Resources, etc.) are effectively maintained and developed.
  • Provides technical support to students and faculty with library computer usage, printing and e-Resource access.

Music Instrument Bank

  • Maintains instrument bank records, ensuring that files are up to date and fully digitized.
  • Manages instrument loan process and policy compliance for students of the Glenn Gould School, the Phil and Eli Taylor Performance Academy for Young Artists and the Oscar Peterson School.
  • Facilitates instrument donations and appraisals in collaboration with the Development department.
  • Works with Director of Facilities to secure insurance coverage for all RCM-owned instruments, as well as event-specific coverage when required.
  • Monitors the maintenance of instruments, cases and accessories, arranging repairs as required. Facilitates transportation of instruments offsite for repair when necessary.
  • Facilitate annual inventory of the Music Instrument Bank to ensure that loans are in good standing and instruments are in playable condition.

Staff Management

  • Oversees the work of library staff (1 part-time, 6-8 part-time student work placements, as well as volunteers and practicum students).
  • Manages the hiring, training and scheduling processes of all employees, providing ongoing evaluation and feedback of their work.

Reference Services

  • Assists users with simple and complex information needs through reference interviews.
  • Provides formal and informal instruction in the use of library resources, research methodologies, copyright issues, and proper citation style to RCM students and faculty.
  • Develops guides for library resources and services, effectively presenting these to library users over formal and informal communications.

Donor Relations

  • Processes library donations in collaboration with RCM Development department, evaluating materials and arranging third-party appraisals when needed.
  • Assesses whether donated material can be accepted by the RCM in accordance with the Rupert Edwards Library’s collection development policy.

Job Requirements:

What We’re Looking For

  • Master’s degree in Library and Information Science, or equivalent from an ALA-accredited program.
  • Music education, preferably post-secondary work at the undergraduate or graduate level
  • Experience with original and copy cataloguing using AACR2, MARC, LCC, and LCSH.
  • Experience with creating, importing, and managing LC Authorities (Z39.50).
  • Experience developing web content and instructional material.
  • Experience providing reference and instruction in information literacy.
  • Previous supervisory experience is an asset.
  • The position requires a high degree of technological literacy.
  • Any exposure to the following is considered a significant asset: library automation software, relevant database applications, SQL querying, Koha Integrated Library System, EZProxy.
  • Knowledge of Canadian copyright law, public domain, and fair dealing as they pertain to the use and distribution of print, online and performance music content considered an asset.
  • Passion for curating collections of works by composers from underrepresented groups.
  • Functional knowledge of European languages, such as French, German, Italian or Russian is also an asset.

Salary Range:  $60,000 – $62,000 per annum.

Additional Information

  • This is a full-time position requires occasional evening and Saturday work.
  • Direct Reports: 1 Orchestral and Ensemble Librarian (part-time), and approximately 6-8 Work Study Students per academic year (part-time).
  • A Vulnerable Sector Check may be required.
