It is an exciting time to join Lavery Library at St. John Fisher University in Rochester, NY as we return to a completely renovated building in 2025! Plan the move to our new Special Collections and Archives space where our resources will be featured in a new, secure, climate-controlled location. A dedicated space will provide many opportunities to showcase our collections and create a vision for this newly redesigned position.

The Head of Special Collections and University Archivist provides leadership in the design of services in support of these collections. The librarian creates the overall vision for these services, and guides the process of setting priorities, developing appropriate strategies to support the library mission and strategic plan. As a member of the librarian team, they participate in the liaison program, provide research help services, and design and deliver library instruction for Lavery Library’s robust general education information literacy program and liaison areas (10+ sessions per semester). This is a full-time, 12-month position with occasional evening and weekend hours required. Fisher librarians are professional staff with voting privileges in the Faculty Assembly; professional development and service are encouraged and supported. Required
- Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program in library and information science, archival science or related field
- Graduate coursework or experience in archives or special collections
Preferred
- Professional experience in a library, museum, or archive.
Landmark collections include Anti-Slavery and Abolitionist newspapers, including those of Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony. The George P. Decker Papers, which includes correspondence with Deskaheh Levi General of the Six Nations of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. Our collections have been used by Carnegie Hall, The Museum of Modern Art, HBO, PBS, The Museum of African American History, and The Strong National Museum of Play. We are actively collecting in Rochester Radio History.
