Job Summary
Reporting to the Executive Director, Customer Experience, this position is responsible for determining and leading RPL’s approach to community engagement and partnership development, building strategic partnerships and guiding and supporting the activities undertaken through such partnerships, leading efforts to develop and execute strategies and plans for system-wide programming, and seeking out opportunities and leading efforts to apply innovation to improve RPL’s programs, services, and business processes. As part of RPL’s Leadership Team, this position contributes at strategic, tactical, and operational levels, as required, in the development of all library products and services.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACTIVITIES:
As Director of Community Engagement and Programming you will:
- Focus on the customer experience.
- Support operational improvement across the library system.
- Lead community engagement and partnership development.
- Lead the development and execution of strategies and plans for system-wide programming.
- Develop and recommend to the Executive Director, Customer Experience, an annual operating and capital budget for the operation of the department and associated initiatives/projects.
- Provide effective management and supervision of employees, directly manage and support assigned staff, work with staff to ensure common understanding of how the work unit fits within RPL’s aspiration, purpose, and values and what they are to contribute to the advancement of the RPL strategic plan.
- Champion and support projects and initiatives by working with staff in the development of project plans, including providing direction and, when required, helping identify opportunities for improvement, participate in problem solving, and supporting activities.
- Contribute subject matter expertise and participate in the development of library service and strategic planning in the collective decision-making processes of the Leadership Team.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
You have:
- A relevant undergraduate degree followed by an MLIS from an ALA accredited institution.
- Minimum of seven years of demonstrated progressive advancement, including management experience in the delivery of public services to a broad audience.
- Demonstrated analytical skills and problem-solving ability, with the ability to think strategically and creatively.
- Knowledge of the principles of and experience with community engagement.
- Demonstrated skills and experience in building strategic partnerships with other organizations.
- Innovative thinking shown by experience identifying, researching, and applying new ideas, approaches, services, etc. to improve or expand service offerings and/or business operations in an innovative way.
- Experience in directing the delivery of library programming, supplemented by knowledge of best practices in their delivery.
- Commitment to deliver consistent, high quality customer service to a diverse customer group.
- Demonstrated ability to work constructively in a collaborative decision-making framework.
- Experience and success with grant writing and the supervision and reporting of associated work.
- Demonstrated strong oral and written communication skills, including public speaking, and delivering presentations.

RPL has an inclusive and innovative work environment which offers a competitive salary ($106,860 to $160,290 per annum) and a generous benefits package, including 100% employer paid group benefits and five weeks annual vacation.
