Job Description:

The Hamilton Law Association is a professional association of over 900 members of the local Bar and Judiciary.  Operating out of the John Sopinka Courthouse, the HLA has an identified mission to assist members in becoming successful, respected and fulfilled in their profession. The Law Librarian is responsible for the general oversight of all library matters at the Hamilton Law Association.  Specifically, the role of the person in this position involves, but is not limited to, responsibilities in the following categories:

Supervisory: The Law Librarian is responsible for monitoring all aspects of day-to-day library operations, as well as the activities and deliverables of library staff.

Collections: The Law Librarian is responsible for managing acquisitions, circulation, shelving and collection management, ordering publications, monitoring electronic subscriptions, fulfilling document delivery requests, and participating in deselection of the collection as required.

Client Services: The Law Librarian is responsible for responding to reference, research, and document delivery requests, as well as training lawyers in the use of the Library’s print and electronic resources.

Administrative: The Law Librarian is responsible for compiling monthly statistics, ensuring ongoing in-house and external training for other staff, and participating in continuing education opportunities.

Essential Qualifications and Personal Competencies: 

  • Master of Library and Information Science Degree or equivalent from a recognized university
  • Experience conducting reference and research work using print and electronic resources
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational abilities and attention to detail
  • Flexible and adaptable in both a leadership role and as part of a team

Asset Qualifications (may be used to assess candidate suitability further):

  • Some experience in a supervisory role
  • Knowledge of legal and legislative resources
  • Experience in managing budgets within a professional setting
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office and Adobe InDesign software
