Brief Overview: 

Métis Nation–Saskatchewan (MN–S) is a diverse, growing organization that is transitioning to its own government. As this transition happens, we are developing our teams to maximize our visibility and meaningfully share our ways of living.  

MN–S is hiring for a Communications Officer. Our team is a diverse and growing. We are looking to hire someone who can jump in with both feet and brings an energy that complements our group. This position is in our downtown Saskatoon office and reports to the Storytelling and Content Services (SCC) Manager.  

As an integral part of the team, the Communications Officer will support the Storytelling & Content Services Department and assist in the development and implementation of communications plans and tactics to contribute to government-wide transparency, accountability and citizen engagement across the Nation. The Communications Officer will promote the MN–S brand, interact with the public and establish ongoing communications regarding the activities of MN–S departments and ministries.

We are specifically looking for someone with strong writing skills and potentially, a background in Journalism to help us communicate with our citizens, staff and the public. As a Communications Officer, you are a motivated creative writing dynamo who loves to weave big history making narrative throughout all forms of media. And as a part of the communications team, you are a valued voice who can work under tight deadlines, focus on strategic government communications, but also creative campaigns to educate and inform, sharing the nation’s messages to citizens and stakeholders. 

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Assist in the development and implementation of communication for MN–S.
  • Preparation of time-sensitive written materials, including speeches, briefing notes, key message documents, media backgrounders, magazine articles, social media and website content.       
  • Provide communications and media relations support to MN–S leaders and other key internal stakeholders.
  • Manage social media channels, including developing updates and posting programs and services content for digital platforms.
  • Collaborate with the Communications Manager to develop, enhance and deploy written content focused on delivering MN–S messaging of the day, week, month, and year for public, internal, and government audiences. 
  • Craft messaging that delivers a consistency in tone, language, and substance. 
  • Help maintain our high-level of brand awareness and accuracy.  
  • Work with the Creative Director & Management to help develop written content for campaigns and events.
  • Respond to and track various departmental requests.
  • Contribute to a healthy, respectful and collaborative workplace culture.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications:   

  • A degree or diploma in journalism, communications, social media management, Print/Digital Publication, or Digital Media is preferred. 
  • 3+ years experience working as a content writer/communications officer 
  • Must have experience and knowledge working with Mac platform, Adobe, Microsoft 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), SharePoint, OneDrive, and Teams. 

Knowledge and Skills: 

  • Understanding of Métis culture, citizens, and communities.  
  • Keen knowledge of writing content for storytelling, digital marketing, video, audio (podcasting), and social media.  
  • Ability to learn and grow with the Métis Nation–Saskatchewan through our shared experiences.  
  • Passionate about collaborating with the team on concepts and strategy.  
  • Excellent English written and verbal communications skills. 
  • Knowledge or familiarity with Michif, French, Dene, or Cree an asset.    
  • Knowledge of project management and scheduling software.  
  • Maintain strict confidentiality.  
  • Ability to communicate effectively and confidently to all levels of the organization.  
  • Self-motivated, creative, and strategic thinker with incredible attention to detail.  
  • Can take project from the start to the finish line with the communications team and genuinely enjoys engaging with colleagues to get work done. 
  • Ability to work independently and multitask within calendar deadlines and deliverables.  
  • The ability to work on site or hybrid. 
  • Ability to navigate an ever evolving, changing work environment.  

Additional Requirements:

  • A valid Saskatchewan driver’s license and access to reliable transportation
  • The successful candidate must undergo a Criminal Record Check.
  • Travel and working outside of normal business hours may be required.
