Hours: 35 hours per week. Hours may include evenings and weekends.
Primary Location: Central branch. You will be required to travel to all sites and external events.

In this role, you will support Oakville Public Library’s mandate to Inspire Oakville through internal and external leadership.

What you’ll do

The Branch Supervisor is responsible for overseeing branch operations and staff supervision at the branch. Under the direction of the Manager of Customer Experience, the Branch Supervisor supports efficient branch operations, staff supervision and continuous improvement, a positive team culture, and customer-centric service excellence aligned with the customer experience values and OPL’s strategic priorities.

In this role you will:

·       Lead and inspire a team of various branch employees to demonstrate exceptional customer service, aligning with OPL’s Customer Experience Values.

·       Hire, train, coach, assign work, schedule and evaluate branch employees in conjunction with the Manager.

·       Interpret and implement policies and procedures in accordance with legislative requirements and OPL HR manual.

·       Build and maintain accurate staff schedules in alignment with the Collective Agreement and branch operational needs, while adapting to unforeseen circumstances and making timely updates as required.

·       Track and report accurate payroll entries.

·       Ensure effective and efficient branch operations.

·       Oversee and provide support to branch staff on customer-related matters, including the resolution of customer concerns.

·       Assist in the planning and development of the branch services.

·       Oversee day to day service delivery in the areas of information, readers’ advisory services and circulation and ensure they are consistent across the organization and in line with library policies.

·       Ensure collections are current, well-maintained, and displayed appropriately in accordance with OPL policies, procedures and guidelines.

·       Supervise the ongoing operation and maintenance of the branch’s physical facility and capital equipment.

·       Establish and maintain collaborations beneficial to both the library and the community.

·       Through ongoing observation and participation with staff, suggest and implement operational improvements to enhance customer experience.

·       Comply with the provisions of the Occupational Health & Safety Act, the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, other relevant health and safety legislation, and the Oakville Public Library’s Health & Safety Program.

·       Contribute to system or department initiatives including but not limited to working with internal and external stakeholders.

·       Assist in achieving financial objectives.

·       Act as the person in charge for the entire branch operations in the absence of the Manager.

·       Support library management decisions; participate and contribute to the development and review of policies and procedures.

·       Perform other duties as assigned.

·       Understand and effectively able to implement principles of Every Child Ready to Read ®, Developmental Assets ® and Connected Learning.

·       Demonstrate knowledge of youth services, ages 0-18.

Your experience and educational background

·       Master in Library and Information Science (MLIS) is required

·       Minimum of three (3) years of related library work experience or equivalent combination of education and experience

·       Experience with direct people management

·       Experience in library programming

·       Working knowledge of an integrated library system

·       Excellent customer service and communication skills

·       Experience working in a unionized environment
