Each Nation has distinct histories and distinct traditional territories that fully or partially encompass the city of Burnaby. We encourage you to learn more about the Host Nations whose ancestors have occupied and used these lands, including parts of present-day Burnaby, for thousands of years.<\/p>\n<p>Burnaby is the third largest city in British Columbia, with excellent rapid transit links, significant parkland, and well-equipped recreational facilities. Our 250,000 residents speak 120 languages, and more than half of our culturally diverse population has a mother tongue other than English.<\/p>\n<p>Our four libraries are important public spaces, meeting places and centres for discovery and dialogue, anchored by our broad and deep collections and our commitment to in-person service. Burnaby Public Library is changing to continue to meet the needs of our highly diverse community, with an increased emphasis on community-led approaches and connecting with people outside the library, a greater focus on digital literacy, and a commitment to upgrading and rethinking our public and staff spaces.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Location:<\/strong>\u00a0 Bob Prittie Metrotown, McGill, Cameron and Tommy Douglas Libraries<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hours:<\/strong>\u00a0 Auxiliary shifts will be scheduled as required at all four branches. Shifts will include mornings, afternoons, evenings and weekends.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Position Summary:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Auxiliary Librarians work in a variety of roles, including public service, reference, readers\u2019 advisory, community engagement and collection management. Auxiliary librarians work in the community and in all four library branches.\u00a0 This position involves working evenings and weekends, up to a maximum of 37.5 hours per week.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Duties:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Provide welcoming, inclusive service to patrons of all ages in Burnaby\u2019s culturally diverse community.<\/li>\n<li>Assist in the management of BPL\u2019s deep and broad collections and help patrons to discover unique items through readers\u2019 advisory, and online and in-branch promotion.<\/li>\n<li>Provide expert and personal reference and information services that connect patrons with the resources and information that they need. Assist patrons with technology and digital resources.<\/li>\n<li>Engage with community members to deepen BPL\u2019s knowledge of our community, to identify barriers to library service, and to develop relevant and inclusive library services.<\/li>\n<li>Attend meetings, workshops, and other professional development activities as required.<\/li>\n<li>Act as Librarian-in-Charge when needed, which entails being responsible for library premises and supervision of other staff.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Qualifications:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You have a Master\u2019s degree in librarianship.<\/li>\n<li>You are curious about the needs of library patrons and community members, and passionate for delivering excellent customer service. Customer service experience is a definite asset.<\/li>\n<li>You have knowledge of and enthusiasm for a range of library services.<\/li>\n<li>You have excellent communication skills, a collaborative approach to working with colleagues and community partners, and the ability to work with minimal supervision.<\/li>\n<li>You care about and apply principles of equity, diversity, inclusion and anti-racism to your work.<\/li>\n<li>You use good judgement to make decisions and have good conflict management skills.<\/li>\n<li>You demonstrate connection to and knowledge of the cultural practices, languages, or histories of communities represented in the library\u2019s service area.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Compensation:\u00a0 $39.14 hourly (2024 CUPE rate)<\/p>\n<p><strong>How To Apply<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Forward your resume and cover letter in confidence to careers@bpl.bc.ca and quote competition 2026-10.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Application Deadline:\u00a0 April 24th, 2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We thank all applicants for their interest in Burnaby Public Library.
