The Vincent Graves Greene Philatelic Research Foundation (Greene Foundation) is seeking a Library Manager to replace the incumbent who will retire in 2022.

The Organization

Based in Toronto, the Greene Foundation is Canada’s Philatelic Center.

With a focus on British North America, the Greene Foundation provides high quality stamp expertization and facilitates research and the sharing of historical information through the Harry Sutherland Philatelic Library (HSPL). In the future the Greene Foundation will also establish a world class broadcast centre to further expand its reach globally for both its library and expertization services.

The primary purpose of the Greene Foundation is to encourage study, research and publishing in the areas of the development and history of postal communications and the use of postage stamps.

It maintains the HSPL for use by stamp collectors and researchers and provides meeting space for philatelic societies.

Library Manager Position

This is an exciting time for the Greene Foundation which recently underwent a strategic planning process. The Library Manager will be a key member of the team responsible for delivering the new strategic vision.

The Library Manager is in charge of all aspects of the HSPL including the library team. The team consists of a Librarian who executes the cataloguing and customer-oriented functions of the library. In addition, there is a part time Library Assistant who does a variety of work in support of the Librarian.

Job Duties and Responsibilities of the Library Manager

  • Manages and directs the work of HSPL team to deliver world class customer service and grow the reputation of HSPL.
  • Manages and maintains the library database, Resourcemate and continues the work required to fully digitize the HSPL
  • Works with other philatelic and specialized libraries to share data and develop opportunities for global collaboration.
  • Responsible for facilitating new acquisitions and meeting financial targets for the HSPL as set out by the Foundation’s Executive.
  • In the future the library manager will work closely with the Greene Foundation’s communications director to expand the customer base of the HSPL by leveraging the broadcast centre to reach a wider audience.
  • In cooperation with the Executive Assistant of the Foundation, manages the supply of library materials, hardware and all things needed to maintain an efficient operation and the highest customer service standards.

Qualifications and Skills Required

  • A post-secondary degree in library and information studies, a library technician diploma, or other related training or experience.
  • Demonstrated success in a library management role requiring similar expertise.
  • The candidate must be a self-starter with excellent interpersonal skills and comfortable working with people of diverse backgrounds and personalities.
  • Strong computer skills, particularly with library database software.
  • As with most small businesses, this role includes a wide range of duties and responsibilities.
  • The successful candidate will be hands on, flexible and willing to adapt to a changeable and evolving business environment.

Working Conditions

The Library Manager position is a permanent part time position. The initial time commitment is 20 hours per week with attendance to be agreed. Library hours are 10 am to 4 pm Monday to Friday. There is flexibility on attendance, as long as the hours are met.

The Foundation wishes the Library Manager to commence work no later than September 15, 2022.

The location is 10 Summerhill Ave. in Toronto, one block north of the Summerhill subway station.
