Unity Health Toronto seeks a collaborative, creative, knowledgeable, and service-oriented Digital Services Information Specialist to join the Library Services team. This is a dynamic position on a high-functioning team, and the successful candidate will be detail-oriented, possess and practice critical thinking, and work collaboratively within and outside the library department to integrate library services and collections across the organization. Reporting to the Manager of Health Information & Knowledge Mobilization (HIKM), the Digital Services Information Specialist will be responsible for developing, leading, and coordinating a variety of projects and functions related to electronic resources (e-resources) management, digital initiatives and services, and technology projects. The Library Services team is seeking a team-oriented self-starter with innovative ideas to contribute to the department’s mission of supporting education, research, and evidence-based decision-making in patient care for physicians, staff and learners at Unity Health Toronto.


Electronic resources management, access, and evaluation:

  • Provide and manage access to library e-resources collection using the Alma/Primo library services platform (LSP), library websites (built on SpringShare LibGuides software), and other relevant tools, services and software (e.g. MarcEdit, MS Excel, etc.)
  • Facilitate the trial, review, selection and acquisition of e-resources, and their inclusion in the LSP, library websites, and other relevant access points
  • Maintain current and accurate information about e-resource licenses, access points, and current holdings by liaising with product vendors, publishers and internal stakeholders
  • Troubleshoot access and connectivity issues, respond to user inquiries regarding resource access issues, and resolve access problems with IT, publishers and/or vendors
  • Track and collect resource usage data, and prepare analyses of usage to assist with timely decision-making about e-resources and library digital collections
  • Lead the review and evaluation of e-resources in collaboration with library team and manager, and recommend the subscription and/or cancellation of e-resources based on statistical analysis of usage data, changing information and research needs of hospital staff, and budget considerations
  • Identify opportunities to improve approaches for documentation, communication, and workflow of e-resource management solutions, and take action to implement solutions
  • Serve as the primary contact for Alma/Primo and the administrator for Unity Health Toronto’s instance and profiles in collaboration with the University of Toronto Libraries, ensure documentation is current, and deliver communications and training to library staff as necessary

Web properties:

  • Maintain and update library web properties, and facilitate discovery and access to all current e-resources, print collections, and library information
  • Develop, maintain, and evaluate library web content, including but not limited to: library resource guides (Springshare LibGuides), online forms (Springshare LibWizard), activity tracking software (Springshare LibInsight), library information on the corporate Intranet, library training videos, etc.
  • Integrate and embed library information and e-resources within Intranet and web properties to ensure awareness, currency, access and use by end-users (hospital staff and physicians)
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders and interdepartmental teams to ensure access points and the discovery of library information resources are findable and embedded where appropriate to ensure clinical areas can locate information quickly, intuitively, and successfully
  • Lead a future project to explore, design, and develop a harmonized library web presence for our multi-site hospital network in collaboration with internal stakeholders

Digital services and initiatives:

  • Manage a variety of projects related to technical services for the HIKM department and in collaboration with other Education program teams or staff
  • Provide leadership and expertise in improving and increasing Library offerings across a variety of devices
  • Provide innovative service development and lead technology projects for improving library services (e.g. training/instruction, leverage mobile apps, virtual chat reference, continuous improvement for web properties, search services, client service supports, etc.)
  • Participate in organizational projects related to repository solutions and learning management systems for learning modules, education assets, and digital objects
  • Identify opportunities to automate workflows and processes through adopting new technologies or software
  • Partner and collaborate with hospital IT department staff and leadership as necessary for achieving project and operational goals
  • Collaborate interdepartmentally with IT, Education, and other hospital programs to lend expertise on education solutions, digital projects and emerging technologies
  • Promote the use of appropriate current and emerging technologies and media, and stay current with digital technology trends
  • Lead a future project to implement virtual chat support services for all staff across the multi-site hospital network


  • Assist with library information desk coverage
  • Act as primary contact for library hardware/software technology (e.g. self-checkout machines, assets such as computers, printers, photocopiers)
  • Deliver training opportunities for hospital staff on relevant technologies, software, skills-based instruction, or other topics of interest in-person, using Zoom, and through the creation of recorded videos or other media
  • Participate on various committees as assigned and interested (e.g. within the library team, the Health Sciences Information Consortium, Education program, or the broader organization)


  • Master’s degree from a Library and Information Studies program accredited by the American Library Association
  • 2-3 years of relevant work experience managing electronic resources, web properties, and supporting digital services in a library setting
  • Familiarity and experience with electronic resources licensing and subscription models
  • Substantial knowledge of the electronic resources management lifecycle, and scholarly communication issues and trends including: open access, copyright, metrics, publication ethics, journal selection, predatory publishing, reporting guidelines, authorship etc.
  • Proficiency in the use of common computer software applications (MS Word, Outlook, Excel)
  • Experience and knowledge with specialized library technologies such as using bibliographic databases, library discovery systems, citation management tools, web content management systems (for example LibGuides or WordPress), and the ability to support associated hardware such as self-checkout terminals
  • Experience with web design in a library environment

  • Knowledge and experience with basic administrative oversight of library services platforms (LSP), preferably Alma/Primo
  • Demonstrated experience and working knowledge of HTML, CSS, XML, JavaScript, and/or other markup or programming languages for the web
  • Proficiency with SpringShare suite of applications: LibGuides, LibCal, LibInsight, LibWizard
