Communications & Design Coordinator

St. Joseph’s Hospice is a charitable organization providing compassionate care and companionship to palliative clients, their caregivers and the bereaved recognizing their unique needs.

Role Overview

We are seeking a creative, strategic, big-picture thinker, who has a passion for helping others. Under the direction of the Director of Community Engagement & Development, the Communications & Design Coordinator will work closely with the Community Engagement & Development team.

The objective of this position is to increase awareness of St. Joseph’s Hospice, and work to enhance the organization’s brand, internally and externally, as well as create the necessary marketing and communications pieces that drive the fundraising and program activity of the organization. The Communications & Design Coordinator will conceptualize, create, design and implement communication strategies as required.

The ideal candidate will have a strong history of proven results in all aspects of the role, including exceptional written and verbal communication skills, the ability to write to educate and inspire, manage a project within budget and timelines, have top notch graphic design skills, digital communications and experience with web design and all social media channels.

Above all else, the Communications & Design Coordinator must be nimble, flexible and ready to assist with busy demands of the Department and Organization. The ideal candidate has also worked in and has a good understanding of a fundraising organization.

Please note: This position follows a hybrid work model and will be required in the office three (3) days per week.

Essential Tasks and Duties

Written & Visual Outreach

  • Develop all marketing materials for print, digital and online, from concept to writing, creation and execution.
  • Works collaboratively with the Special Events Coordinator to create digital assets,marketing materials, sponsorship packages and design for all fundraising events at Hospice
  • Create individual donor stewardship reports as necessary and Annual Report to the Community.
  • Support the Major Gift and Annual Giving Program for St. Joseph’s Hospice through Direct Mail Campaigns, written proposals, and digital marketing campaigns.
  • Manage Media Relations for the organization within the community.
  • Manage all Social Media – (Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook) – using original videos, graphics, photographs, and stories).
  • Manage Website.
  • Manage and maintain email marketing system and associated distribution lists
  • Supports all Communications needs for Hospice

Story Telling

  • Engage patients, clients and family members, donors (and others as necessary) who are willing to share their Hospice experiences. Stories will be used for website, newsletters, Annual Report to the Community, and other promotional material as needed. 

Media Monitoring

  • Monitor media for hospice- or palliative care-related stories and bring relevant research or key knowledge to the Director.
  • Compile and share appropriate stories via social medial, always relating things back to St. Joseph’s Hospice.
  • Maintains relationships with local media contacts.
  • Creates Media Releases – as necessary and required. 


  • Take photographs and video to support publications, website and social media.
  • Work with professional photographer when necessary, scheduling photoshoots with subjects internally or in the community. 

Branding & Graphic Design

  • Maintain an organizational style guide and provide editing, formatting and proofreading services for all departments.
  • Develop and maintain graphic and brand standards and ensure their consistent application by internal and external stakeholders.
  • Training sessions for new staff and refresher sessions from time-to-time for existing staff on brand standards.

Required knowledge, skills and abilities

  • A minimum of three to five years’ communications and public relations experience in a not-for-profit, charitable, or fundraising organization.
  • Ability to work collaboratively, take direction and feedback.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish priorities in a fast-paced environment, complete multiple tasks, and deliver results on deadline without close supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to create and implement plans for communications projects, including publications and events.
  • Superior oral and written communication skills and strong presentation skills required.
  • An impeccable eye for detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to write in a variety of styles for a range of audiences and to translate complicated concepts into lay language.
  • Highly refined design skills – demonstrated knowledge of the principles of graphic design, page layout, typography, and colour theory, and print production.
  • Advanced knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Excellent computer skills including demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office programs, email marketing software and content management software.
  • Experience with web content publishing and web content management systems, including HTML editors, basic web page design, effective content flow, and content creation for the web.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment and show initiative and creativity.
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality and be able to handle sensitive information appropriately and with discretion.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships and work well with diverse groups of people.
  • Ability to deal with stressful, sensitive or difficult situations with tact and diplomacy, including ability to exercise judgment and discretion.
  • As St. Joseph’s Hospice deals with death and dying and grief, must have a level of comfort working within the milieu.

Education, On the Job Training, and Other Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited university or college with an emphasis on communications, public relations, journalism, design, or equivalent.
  • Minimum of three to five years’ work-related experience.
  • Personal transportation required.
