Our client, Shortgrass Library System is looking for an experienced Manager, Systems and Technical Services to join their team of high-performing and detail-oriented library professionals. The successful candidate will report to the CEO.

The ideal candidate for this role will have a strong information technology aptitude with a general understanding of networks, operating systems and computer hardware. About Shortgrass Library System:

Shortgrass Library System is one of Alberta’s seven regional library systems. Covering the southeast corner of Alberta, and headquartered in the City of Medicine Hat, Shortgrass serves a population of 107,349 through a network of fourteen autonomous public libraries.

Located in the scenic South Saskatchewan River Valley, Medicine Hat (population 63,260) gets 2,512 hours of sunshine per year! This makes it one of “Canada’s Sunniest Cities”, and an attractive year-round playground for a wide variety of activities. The city also offers reasonable housing costs, no provincial sales tax and some of the lowest income taxes in the country!

The Manager, Systems and Technical Services will be responsible for:

  • Working with the CEO and Board in the overall direction of Shortgrass Library System as well as performing any duties to achieve the organization’s mission and goals.
  • Administering the Integrated Library System, Discovery Layer, and online resources.
  • Continuously evaluating acquisitions, cataloging, processing and IT services provided by Shortgrass to ensure their relevance and efficiency.
  • Collaborating with 3rd party IT vendors to oversee and coordinate IT systems and network infrastructure.
  • Managing budget planning and monitoring in areas of responsibility.
  • Managing HR activities associated with acquisitions, cataloging and processing staff.
  • Collaborating with member library staff, partner organizations, vendors and government officials to achieve the organizational goals.
  • Compiling and distributing statistical information about organizational activities.
  • Coordinating e-Resource licensing and support.
  • Making recommendations for new hires as well as training and supervising employees, ensuring they are aware of areas of responsibility.

You and Your Experience:

  • Master of Library Science/Master of Library and Information Science degree from an ALA accredited library school or equivalent.
  • A highly detail-oriented, organized individual that has exceptional communication and time management skills.
  • Experience administering an Integrated Library System and Discovery Layer.
  • Strong information technology aptitude.
  • Working knowledge of common cataloguing tools, classification systems, descriptive cataloguing standards, and MARC format.
  • Experience working with web development technologies and website content management systems (e.g., WordPress, Drupal).
  • Advanced skill level in Microsoft Excel.
  • Experience as a Team Leader/Supervisor, as well as leading and managing projects.
  • Strong numeracy skills and ability to forecast expenses, create budgets, and track/control spending over time.
