Prince Albert is home to about 40,000 residents, burgeoning Indigenous communities, a vibrant arts culture, and many wonderful recreational opportunities both within the City and area. The Prince Albert Public Library (PAPL) is a municipal library with a diverse collection of around 140,000 physical items, a wide range of electronic resources, and many fruitful partnerships with local groups and organizations. The Community Librarian will strengthen those connections and build new ones.


The Community Librarian furthers Prince Albert Public Library’s mission and strategic goals by building lasting partnerships with community groups, local organizations, and individuals. Through these connections, they learn about the library services Prince Albert residents want and need, inform the public of the services PAPL offers, and provide instruction in information literacy to help build strong, informed communities.

Duties and Responsibilities

Community Engagement

  • Actively seeks to build partnerships with community groups, local organizations and businesses, and individuals to advance PAPL’s strategic goals, representing the library’s interests.
  • Works with the City and other community partners to advance community development projects in line with PAPL’s mission and strategic aims.
  • Identifies underserved communities and other non-users, and collaborates with those groups and their library colleagues to develop programs and services to address those citizens’ information needs.
  • Represents PAPL on community advisory boards and at community events.
  • Reports to library administration assessing community development efforts and identifying emerging trends within the City and its communities.
  • Promotes the library and its programs and services on social media, the website, and other media to advance PAPL’s mission.

Service Development

  • Develops and delivers library services in conjunction with the Programs Department for Prince Albert residents beyond PAPL’s branches.
  • Works with community groups and organizations to plan, prepare, implement, and assess library involvement at community events. Represents PAPL at community events.

Outreach and Promotions

  • Actively engages with schools and other educational institutions, community organizations, and local businesses to develop programs and to promote information literacy and knowledge of library services.
  • Works with the Programs Department and senior staff to develop the library’s social media and web presence, collaborating to develop publicity for the library.

General Duties

  • Communicates with colleagues and administration regularly to ensure awareness of and support for community engagement services and strategies.
  • Works with the Programs Department and social media staff to develop engaging services.
  • Performs other duties as required.


  • Master’s degree in Library Science or its equivalent from an ALA accredited University.
  • Develops and sustains positive working relationships with colleagues, the general public, community groups and organizations, and external partners.
  • Strong competence in navigating technical issues with computers and mobile devices.
  • Proven experience with creating and editing web pages, posting on social media, and communicating with media, including an understanding of potential legal concerns (copyright, privacy, etc.).
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle.


  • Experience in advocacy, community engagement, public relations or marketing, and/or social work.
  • Previous experience performing library reference interviews.
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities, newcomers, and diverse communities generally.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including skills in public speaking, delivering presentations, and instruction.
  • Excellent networking and partnership-building skills, as well as team building skills.
  • Excellent creativity, strategic thinking, and problem solving skills.
  • Proven ability to organize time and activities, delegate tasks, meet deadlines, and to work both independently and as part of a team.

Terms of Employment

The position is a permanent, full-time in-scope (union) opportunity. Successful candidates will be expected to work evenings and weekends (typically two nights a week and every second weekend, respectively) and able to work at any of PAPL’s branches. As of 2022, salary is $28.38 to $34.18 per hour ($55,341 to $66,651 gross per year) depending on experience working on average of 37.5 hours per week. There will be a six month probationary period. The Library participates in the Municipal Employees Pension Plan and the position has a health benefit plan.
