McBride and District Public Library

The Board of Trustees of the McBride and District Public Library is seeking a new Library Director.

Situated on the Yellowhead Highway (Highway 16), McBride is a small community situated in the pristine Robson Valley region of British Columbia. McBride lies between the Canadian Rockies and the Cariboo Mountains astride the great Fraser River in the interior of BC. Economically, McBride is as diverse as its people, with farming, forestry, government services and tourism creating the majority of job opportunities for residents. McBride is ideally situated for outdoor recreation with exceptional snowmobiling opportunities, nordic and backcountry skiing, hiking, paddling, mountaineering, gardening and a variety of arts. Duties:

The Library Director is responsible for the day-to-day management of the library, including collection development, community programming, budgeting, procuring of grants and staff supervision. The small size of our library means that the Library Director will be involved in every aspect of library services, including overseeing a satellite reading room in the community of Dome Creek, west of McBride. The Library Director can expect to participate actively in a variety of public relations activities on behalf of the library, and will work creatively with a range of community organizations and individuals. This role entails some ingenuity in providing library services in the Robson Valley from Tete Jaune to Dome Creek, with a combined population of around 1800. Requirements:

The Library Director position requires strong organizational, problem solving, interpersonal and communications skills (both written and oral). Applicants should have demonstrated experience in leadership and administration; supervisory experience is desirable. Experience of collection development is essential. Budgeting, accounting and grant writing skills will be an asset. Experience in applying new technologies (i.e. electronic media) to library services is essential. As the Director of a small public library, time management is a must.

Qualifications:

Candidates should have strong leadership skills along with post-secondary education in Library Science or Library Technology. Working knowledge of Evergreen’s Sitka Integrated Library System is desired. Experience in libraries in small communities would be a significant asset.
