Job Summary

Information Technology Services (ITS) is dedicated to a constructive, team-orientated environment, gathering varied perspectives, sharing knowledge, and building effective partnerships that enable our partners to achieve their goals by advising, providing solutions, and delivering service excellence in alignment with the University’s mission and goals. Reporting to the Director, Business Operations, the Communications Specialist is responsible for effectively developing, maintaining and coordinating the communication needs of the ITS department. This position is also required to strategically advise the senior leadership team on issues management, with a particular focus on risk management.

Key Responsibilities

  • Creates and maintains the communications strategy for the department, which includes internal communications to faculty, staff, students, external communications to key stakeholders and communications for departmental promotion and information purposes.
  • Leads the development of, and/or delivers, communication plans to support both annual and new one-time, ongoing initiatives for ITS. Leads in the generation of ideas and concepts and writes statements to convey messages appropriate for the diverse audiences and applications.
  • Researches existing products, audience, environmental factors which may influence the scope of the creative elements used and recommend the appropriate channels of communication which will have the most impact, on a project-by-project basis.
  • Develops content for ITS policies and guidelines and works with the ITS team to ensure dynamic content is used for all communications plans through established and emerging communication channels.
  • Builds brand identity for ITS within the guidelines of the university and liaises with Communications, Marketing & Creative Services (CMC) regarding projects managed by ITS and refers units when working with CMC directly.
  • Coordinates the department’s online presence and social media activity. Designs, develops, and coordinates marketing and promotional campaigns for special projects.


The successful applicant will be eligible for hybrid work (combination of in-person work on campus and remote work) as agreed by all parties based on operational requirements and university guidelines.

Undergraduate degree in communications & marketing, journalism, public relations or a related field, plus three to five years’ experience in a communications, web content strategy, web editor and/or marketing position in an IT, post secondary education or a related setting (or equivalent combination of training and experience) is required. Formal training in latest version Adobe AEM touch UI (content management system) and project management are an asset. Exceptional communication skills, including strong writing abilities are required. Highly developed interpersonal skills and problem-solving skills are required. Demonstrated experience producing user-centric web pages in a content management system is required. Experience in identifying target audiences and creating content that engages, informs and motivates is required. Experience with project management and stakeholder engagement is preferred. Experience working with a variety of communications and technological platforms, including knowledge of social media channels would be an asset.
