Position Title:           Children’s Services Assistant, Gear and Gadgets

Department:             County of Brant Public Library

Reports to:                Director, Programs and Collections

Status:                        Temporary full-time, approximately 12 months

Start Date:                   Immediate

General Purpose

Reporting to the Director, Programs and Collections, the Children’s Services Assistant, Gear and Gadgets will assist readers of all ages in the selection and interpretation of library materials, perform circulation duties, and maintain an organized and attractive branch.  They will perform professional duties that require adherence to standards of accuracy, timeliness, tact, and confidentiality.  The position will manage the Gear and Gadgets collection, including making recommendations for purchase, maintaining the exiting collection, and organizing its physical storage.  Preparation and presentation of programs and attending outreach events for all age groups related to the Gear and Gadgets collection will be additional duties.  A varying schedule including evenings and weekends which may include travel will be a part of this role.

Knowledge

Candidates will possess proven excellent interpersonal skills in dealing with staff team members, excellent customer service skills and knowledge of the principles and practices of professional library work. An understanding of child and youth development, in-depth knowledge of children’s literature and reference techniques is required.  Excellent technology skills, a strong knowledge of emerging Gear and Gadgets trends, proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and experience with integrated library systems is required.  Candidates should have a proven ability to prepare and present programs to multiple age groups.

Education

A post-secondary degree or diploma in a related field is required.  A recognized library science or information studies degree or diploma is preferred.

Experience

2 or more years of experience in a public library setting and a minimum 1 year of experience delivering public library programming.

Hours of work:           35 hours/week

Initial Schedule:

Week 1: Mon 9-5, Tues 12-8, Wed 9-5, Thu 12-8, Fri 9-5

Week 2: Mon 9-5, Tues 12-8, Wed 9-5, Thu 12-8, Sat 9-5

Compensation:         $50,669 to $59,259 (under review)
