Job Summary

Reporting to the Senior Manager, the Metadata Coordinator is responsible for managing cataloguing and metadata creation for CELA and helping to shape metadata practices and processes for the organization. This role is also involved in the ingestion of accessible digital assets into the CELA catalogue.

Scope and Summary of Primary Responsibilities 

  • Perform original and copy cataloguing for materials in the CELA collection, including braille, audio and ebooks;
  • Evaluate and improve CELA record quality and catalogue integrity; Maintain and improve both ONIX and MARC metadata
  • Track acquisitions and ingestion;
  • Coordinate ingestion of accessible materials with the required metadata into the CELA catalogue;
  • Coordinate digital asset and metadata sharing with partner organizations;
  • Map current metadata workflows and make recommendations on metadata workflow to improve efficiency;
  • Make recommendations for opportunities to improve content discoverability;
  • Coordinate the mapping of metadata between different formats to ensure it meets all required standards for sharing with libraries, OCLC, Accessible Books Consortium and other partner organizations;
  • Evaluate CELA’s current position with respect to the creation and use of accessibility metadata and contribute to improvements in the use and display accessibility metadata;
  • Evaluate the category headings for CELA and make recommendations for improvement;
  • Prepares statistics and reporting as required;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications (education, training and experience)

  • Degree in library science or library technician diploma or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience;
  • Experience with library cataloguing and metadata creation of material in electronic/digital formats;
  • Experience with copy cataloguing and cataloguing principles;
  • Knowledge of metadata concepts and standards, both from library and publishing sectors, and familiarity with the concept of data formats (XML, MARC, ONIX etc.);
  • Experience planning and mapping metadata between different formats;
  • Knowledge of MarcEdit, OCLC Cataloguing and other editing tools;
  • Knowledge of AACR2, RDA and MARC;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Bilingual (French/English) written and verbal skills are preferred; knowledge of a language other than English is an asset.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and positively with individuals and groups in a distributed work environment;
  • Self-directed and good at managing time and task prioritization
  • Creative and proactive approach to problem-solving;
  • Commitment to improving the accessibility of public library collections and services across Canada.
  • Lived experience with a print disability as defined by the Canadian Copyright Act is desirable.

Work Environment  

  • This is a virtual office opportunity and the successful candidate will supply their own home office, computer, and reliable internet access
  • This is a full-time, permanent position at 35 hours a week.
  • The position offers a full benefits package with a salary range of $32 to $35 per hour, depending on skills and experience.

Compensation: $32-$35 per hour, 35 hours per week
