Your role

The Senior Reporter is assigned to the Parliamentary Bureau in Ottawa. This position requires tenacity and experience in covering federal politics with clarity and accuracy. This position will involve broadcasting on CBC News Network, providing content for The National and CBC Radio programs and writing for cbc.ca/politics. We are looking for someone who will thrive in a competitive and demanding work environment involving long and unpredictable work hours. This position will be part of a rotation that includes evenings shifts and weekend shifts.  

If you’re right for this job, you are someone who already has or can rapidly develop a broad network of contacts to help us advance our news beyond the agenda on an hourly and daily basis by producing impact, original journalism.  Experience using access to information laws would be an important advantage.  We expect you to produce daily content, to attend the daily news meetings and provide value-added journalism that adds impact to the day’s news.

We are looking for someone who will produce impact journalism. The successful candidate must also possess the ability to work cooperatively with a talented news team and make that team better by offering ideas that will lead to original and compelling political news coverage across all platforms. Key tasks will include gathering information on issues and events of national significance from a variety of carefully developed sources. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated an ability to intelligently engage audiences through social media.

Function:
On a continuing and regular basis, performs reporting and editorial assignments for online, radio and television, which involve the gathering, writing and presentation of information related to national and international issues, the Parliament of Canada and regional issues judged to be of national importance. Work adheres to CBC journalistic and programming policies, standards and practices. General direction is provided but there is a high expectation for initiative and independent judgement. Work regularly requires the coordination of the activities of others.

Key Tasks:

• Gather and research information on complex and detailed issues of national significance from a variety of parliamentary, bureaucratic, national and/or regional sources.
• Regularly report on air, describing events and issues of national significance, and providing in-depth analysis to enhance the understanding of the listener or viewer.
• Work closely with network program personnel and others in the planning and execution of coverage of significant national events, either for national information programs or specials.
• Recognize issues of significance and take immediate and effective action to ensure an appropriate level of coverage.
• Conceive of, and arrange for, creative visual and/or audio effects for items being produced.
• Participate in the preparation, production and presentation of news length and long-form journalistic pieces.  

We are looking for a candidate with the following: 

• A university degree or equivalent.
• Five (5) years of comparable and relevant experience, which demonstrates proven ability in the field, and knowledge of Ottawa and Parliament Hill and of the broadcasting industry.
• A distinctive life experience, perspective or expertise to the team that will enrich our coverage.
• Cultural sensitivity and awareness.
• Flexibility to perform other tasks such as filing from the field, reporting on all platforms, taking stills, and producing video content for digital.
• Excellent understanding of CBC’s journalistic policies.
• Knowledge of CBC news and information programming on all platforms.
• Demonstrated ability to develop meaningful stories, develop contacts and beats.
• Ability to communicate story and production ideas effectively.
• Work cooperatively with editors and producers in story development, vetting and presentation.
• Energetic and disciplined with strong organizational skills demonstrating an ability to initiate stories and to meet deadlines.
• Ability to work cooperatively and respectfully with fellow bureau reporters, producers, editors and videographers.
• Previous live hosting in news is considered a strong asset.
• Must hold a valid driver’s license and passport.
• Must be prepared to travel throughout Canada and occasionally, as required, abroad, sometimes on short notice.
• Ability to work and communicate in both official languages is considered a strong asset.
• Must be prepared to work weekends, evenings, as required.
