Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Manager, Communications, the Communications Specialist is responsible for delivering a comprehensive range of communication support and storytelling. An agile technical writer and a brand champion, this role will support the Communications team, helping to align the priorities of Bow Valley College and ultimately, elevating the profile of the organization.

The Communications Specialist will be accountable for Communications and Creative Storytelling, including writing, editing, and supporting communications initiatives as outlined in the annual communications plan with the goal of engaging and informing employees. The successful candidate will produce original, clear, and credible ideas, messages, and scripts, write copy for various channels and initiatives including editorial content for the college’s internal and external websites, communications plans, video scripts, and event scripts or speeches.

Additionally, the Communications Specialist writes, edits, and posts fresh content for Bow Valley College’s Intranet, in collaboration with the broader Communications team.

Reporting, evaluation, and metrics comprehension are key to this position, with the Communications Specialist evaluating benchmarks and measures of success as set out in the annual communications plan and annual business plan while working with the Communications team to develop and report on internal engagement metrics and measures.


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Technical Writing, Communications, English, Political Science, or related field.
  • Minimum three years of related experience in a writing and editing role
  • Experience writing in a post-secondary education environment would be an asset
  • Outstanding English language writing, editing, and communication skills
  • Strong time-management skills and ability to prioritize and juggle concurring projects and multiple requirements.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and client service skills are required.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative team environment as well as independently
  • Excellent research, observation, synthesis, and analytical skills, supported by a high level of attention to detail and accuracy
  • Government relations, policy, or technical writing experience is preferred
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Word and Adobe
  • Knowledge of Canadian Press style
  • Working knowledge of Content Management Systems (CMS) would be an asset
  • An equivalent combination of directly related education and experience may be considered.
